Everyday more than 300,000 Android devices are activated globally. A growing number of these mobile device activations are in markets across Africa, making local African mobile content more relevant and important than ever before. In recognition of this, Google today announced its Google Android Developer Challenge, inviting talented and creative developers in sub-Saharan Africa to design and build original Android applications for mobile phones that will delight users.

Categories

Entries include entertainment, media and games; social networking and communications; and productivity, tools and lifestyle. Winners will each receive an Android phone and $25,000 (USD).

Barcamp Nigeria 2011 was held on the 11th and 12th of March 2011 at the Center for Information Technology & Systems of the University of Lagos ..Here is a quick recap of what took place:

- Chika Nwobi, who founded and IPO’d MTech gave a talk on business models. He drew almost exclusively from the work of Peter Drucker

-Lola Masha of Google Nigeria also came around and had informal chats with just about everybody. she talked quite a bit about the fact that Google’s strategy for Africa is really to participate actively in the local tech scene and drive its growth, as opposed to strictly profit making.

-QluQlu introduced its www.QluQlu.com.ng, a marketing platform for local Nigerian businesses to reach their customers.

-Google and Nokia made presentations on their focus on Nigeria, as well as Sub-Saharan Africa

Iroko Partners, which partnered with Google’s youtube to make it happen, provides distribution, rights management and marketing services to Africa’s many regional movie industries. They are rapidly partnering with all the major players in film distribution to sanitize Nollywood internationally.

Their list of content distribution partners also include Dailymotion,Amazon on demand and Itunes.
