Africa encompasses more countries (53) than Asia and offers significant economic diversity. The nations of Africa currently are at a range of stages of development, political maturation, and urbanization.
The same trend that leads to market turmoil in one African nation, such as food price increases in Egypt, can be a growth catalyst in resource-rich countries such as South Africa and Nigeria.

Interesting facts:There are 52 African cities with more than 1 million people (in comparison, there are 52 in Europe and 48 in North America).
Africa’s labor force will grow from 500 million to 1.1 billion, at which point it will exceed China’s and India’s.

A new transnational African business class may be emerging, which could flood sub-Saharan Africa with low-cost products from China. “China is trying to keep things at government level,” said Mr. Barry, “but the Chinese people will soon realize that it’s better for business to deal directly with ordinary Africans.” China would prefer Africans to do business with China without living here, yet 90 per cent of Guangzhou’s Africans act as intermediaries between the African continent and Chinese factories.

“The focus is changing. What’s interesting is how much more focus they’re putting on exports to Africa and on agriculture, commercial agriculture,” Sands told a meeting of the Royal African Society in London.[ Daniel ]
There is growing iinterest in China for farming land overseas, notably in Africa. What are the economics at play here ? China has over 1 billion people to feed, Africa has large and under-utilized farming land;Africa land assets are underused, thus undervalued thus cheap;China will be wise to acquire these cheap assets now than wait and have to pay an higher price in the future.

The book discusses work of professionals in the four key media industries:
-Advertising
-Journalism
-Film/TV production
-Digital games

One of the interesting topics discusses in the book is the outsourcing taking place in the media industries.
Advertising: The author tells us about the outsourcing of creative accounts to none other than China and India.

News and Journalism: Subcontracting of news to copy desks and international news agencies. outsourcing of work to non-salaried workers also dubbed “Citizen media”.

Film and TV: Shift production to tax-friendly and low-cost labor countries like South Africa.

Video Games: Outsourcing of creative work to specialized companies often located in South east Asia ( Vietnam,South Korea,Thailand,Malaysia)

Purchase book

What is the story here ? knowledge- based industries are outsourcing stages of the production chain to foreign, cost-effective ,knowledge workers based outside of the local job markets. For big companies with extensive costs , cutting costs by outsourcing makes perfect sense. It is also the case for new entrants to the media industry, to take advantage of a large pool of inexpensive talents will only make sense. Could it be that media start-ups in the cities of Abidjan,Nairobi,Casablanca solve their problems of access to creatives, cheap talented labors and experienced writers by simply outsourcing these tasks to the same companies in China and India ?

Guru

Elance

are two examples of companies creating the market place for cheap-skilled labor to meet the needs of budget heavy companies
