Everyday more than 300,000 Android devices are activated globally. A growing number of these mobile device activations are in markets across Africa, making local African mobile content more relevant and important than ever before. In recognition of this, Google today announced its Google Android Developer Challenge, inviting talented and creative developers in sub-Saharan Africa to design and build original Android applications for mobile phones that will delight users.

Categories

Entries include entertainment, media and games; social networking and communications; and productivity, tools and lifestyle. Winners will each receive an Android phone and $25,000 (USD).

An important conference that took place durin g the year 2010 & went under the radar of many is The African Media Leaders Forum (AMLF)  the flagship programme of the African Media Initiative (AMI), a Pan-African Initiative to promote democratic governance, social development and economic growth by strengthening the continent’s media sector.

A key characteristic of media development in Africa has been the heavy concentration on journalism support at the expense of addressing the business aspects of media.

The theme of the 2010 AMLF was: “Funding African Media in an Age of Uncertain Business Models”.

Sessions on different subject matters related to the media industry included:

-Funding the African Media: Understanding the Financial Sector’s Approach to Funding Media; How to Bring Down the Barriers to Access to Capital and Promote Media as a Growth Sector.

-Gatekeeper versus Networker Journalism. What are the principles of journalism in the 21st century and who can claim to be a journalist today? What are the possible business models for those principles of journalism?

-African Media and the Development Challenge.
